The Mi-Ki was created by Maureen Van Wormer, a Shih Tzu breeder in Wisconsin.

1991

Maureen introduced the world to her creation,

The Mi-Ki and the Imperial Toy Mi-Ki Club.

1992

Another breed club was started that offered purebred paperwork and limited pedigree information.

As records were poorly kept by Maureen, there was some confusion as to the breeds used to create the Mi-Ki other than what was stated by Maureen herself.

This is where science stepped in to lend a helping hand.

2008

AMRA had the wonderful privilege of working with Mars Wisdom Panel in the development of the very first DNA genetic marker identifying the Mi-Ki breed.

This was a huge step forward for the Mi-Ki as we now had scientific proof that they are, in fact, a pure breed.

2009

The Wisdom Panel Mi-Ki DNA signature marker debuted

in October of 2009 and the Mi-ki became a unique breed of its own.

The extensive analysis of hundreds of DNA genetic markers confirmed several breeds used to develop the Mi-Ki breed and some unexpected breed influences as well.

2022

Embark announced the development of a Mi-Ki signature marker to be added to the Embark breed database.

This marker validated the accuracy of the original Wisdom Panel Mi-Ki marker.

Now Mi-Ki breeders and pet owners have the choice of two Mi-Ki breed tests to ensure the purebred status of their Mi-Ki.

Certifying Through Genetics

Thanks to the advancements in genetic technology, we can certify parentage of puppies, verify purebred status, test for health disorders and even test to see what coat color genes our Mi-Ki carry.

That is why the American M-Ki Registry Association prides itself on keeping detailed records on all AMRA registered Mi-Ki and their litters. We feel this information will be vital someday to the Mi-Ki breeders and enthusiasts sure to come.
